What is Moling?
Moling is a trenchless way of installing a new water supply pipe along the route of an old one, and on Hindhead’s free-draining greensand soils it is usually the sensible choice. The village sits on a friable sandstone ridge that weathers into thin, sandy ground supporting heather, gorse and pine, and many homes are reached by long drives across large wooded plots, so an open trench would mean a great deal of digging and reinstatement. With moling we excavate two small pits, one near the boundary stop tap and one where the supply enters the property, then drive an impact mole through the soil between them and pull a new MDPE pipe in behind it. The old lead pipe is disconnected at both ends and left in the ground. Because the route in between is never opened up, the surface across your drive, lawn and any mature heathland planting is left exactly as it was, which matters in a setting this close to the Surrey Hills National Landscape.
Why Replace Lead Pipes?
Hindhead is supplied by South East Water, and the water here is hard. Aggregator data puts GU26 at roughly 268 ppm calcium carbonate, well inside the hard band, in line with South East Water’s network, which is classified as hard overall. The lead in tap water comes from the old pipe itself, dissolving into water that has been standing in an ageing lead supply line overnight, so the village’s surviving Victorian and Edwardian lead lines are the ones worth attention.
