We’re T&L Moling Contractors, WIAPS-registered specialists in trenchless water supply pipe replacement across Godalming and the surrounding GU7 and GU8 postcodes, taking in Farncombe, Binscombe, Frith Hill and Charterhouse.
Godalming is one of the oldest market towns in Surrey, with more than 350 listed buildings and a heritage-rich centre. Replacing a lead or failing supply pipe here without disturbing period brickwork, tiled paths or Bargate stone is exactly what moling is built for.

Godalming sits on the Lower Greensand, with the iron-rich Bargate Beds running under Frith Hill and Charterhouse and the loamy Hythe Beds beneath much of the town centre. That means what lies under your front garden varies a good deal from one neighbourhood to the next. We’ve replaced failing supply pipes here, including a run of old black poly water mains in Godalming that we swapped out for new 25mm MDPE, and we cover the same kind of work across our wider patch in Guildford and Farnham. The properties range from period cottages near the High Street through Victorian villas at Crownpits and Summers Road to 20th-century homes in Farncombe, Binscombe and on the Ockford Ridge and Aaron’s Hill estates.
The execution is straightforward. We dig two small pits, one near the boundary stop tap and one by the property, then drive an impact mole through the ground between them and pull the new MDPE pipe in behind it. Your driveway, lawn and any paving in between stay intact, and most homes are back on water the same day.

Paul was great. Fitted me in last minute. Really professional and personable. Very good price and very efficient. All done in 5 hours. Nothing was too much hassle even when I changed my mind for the stop cock location after the pipe was already run. They also ran a temporary connection back to the current mains water location under the stairs as this will be relocated by my plumber at a later date to the new stop cock location. They even left my front garden tidier than when they started :) Would recommend highly. I received my certificate of install the same day and they can connect directly to the water meter as they are WIAPS approved so no need to wait for thames water final connections.+12Posted on Google![]()

We had an external lead water pipe that needed replacing, found this company via Google search and they got back to our web form submission super quickly to agree on a quote and timing. Arrived on time, completed the repairs, put everything back in place (patio tiles etc) meticulously once the works were completed and provided the works certificate promptly. Thanks again to the team at T&L.Posted on Google![]()

Minimal mess & no trenches

Friendly, professional service

In a heritage town like Godalming, where so many homes sit behind period boundary walls, Bargate stone and historic paving, moling is usually the only sensible way to install a new water supply pipe. Open trenching across a listed front garden or through the iron-rich Bargate sandstone footings around Frith Hill would be slow, messy and likely to draw conservation officer involvement. Moling sidesteps almost all of it. We excavate two small access pits, one near the boundary stopcock and one near where the pipe enters the property, then drive an impact mole through the soil between them and pull a new MDPE pipe along behind it. The old lead or failing pipe is disconnected at both ends and left in the ground. The route in between is untouched, which on the free-draining sandy greensand soils under Godalming keeps reinstatement to a minimum and the original surfaces exactly as we found them.

Godalming’s water is supplied by Thames Water and runs very hard, with figures reported around 278 to 309 ppm depending on the source and supply zone, well above the 200 ppm threshold for hard water. The lead in tap water comes from the old pipe rather than the supply, dissolving into water that has been standing in an ageing lead line overnight. Combined with the town’s pre-Victorian and Victorian housing stock, that means there are still plenty of original lead supply lines in service across GU7 and GU8.
Most Godalming homeowners get in touch after one of these:
Replacing the old supply with MDPE via moling is the standard fix, and on heritage and period properties it’s the only realistic way to do it without affecting listed features. Most jobs in Godalming take a single day.
