We’re T&L Moling Contractors, WIAPS-registered moling specialists working across the London Borough of Bromley and the BR1 and BR2 postcodes, including Shortlands, Bickley, Sundridge Park, Hayes and Keston. Bromley is the largest London borough by area, with 47 conservation areas and a housing stock that runs from late-Victorian villas through 1930s semis.
We’ve replaced old lead supply pipes here using trenchless moling, fitting modern MDPE without tearing up driveways or front gardens.

Bromley’s transformation from a Kent market town into a Greater London borough was set off by the railway reaching Shortlands in 1858. The Victorian professionals who moved out from central London built the large detached villas you still see across Shortlands, Bickley and Sundridge Park, and Edwardian and 1930s suburban estates filled in around them through Hayes, Keston and Bromley Common. A lot of these homes still carry their original lead service lines, and many sit inside one of the borough’s 47 conservation areas. In April 2026 we carried out a lead pipe replacement in Bromley itself, running new MDPE beneath the driveway and pathways using the no-dig method, and we cover adjacent areas including Beckenham, Orpington and Chislehurst.
The method is straightforward. We dig two small access pits, one near the boundary stopcock and one where the pipe enters the property, then drive a mole between them and pull the new MDPE pipe through behind it. Tiled paths, lawns and block paving stay intact, and most Bromley jobs are finished in a single day.

Paul was great. Fitted me in last minute. Really professional and personable. Very good price and very efficient. All done in 5 hours. Nothing was too much hassle even when I changed my mind for the stop cock location after the pipe was already run. They also ran a temporary connection back to the current mains water location under the stairs as this will be relocated by my plumber at a later date to the new stop cock location. They even left my front garden tidier than when they started :) Would recommend highly. I received my certificate of install the same day and they can connect directly to the water meter as they are WIAPS approved so no need to wait for thames water final connections.+12Posted on Google![]()

Moling is a no-dig way of installing a new water supply pipe along the route of an old one, which suits Bromley’s mix of Victorian, Edwardian and 1930s property particularly well. Much of the borough sits over the chalk-and-clay London Basin, with London Clay across the northern districts grading into thinner, chalk-influenced soils as the ground rises south toward the North Downs. Open trenching through that, across period tiled paths and mature front gardens, is slow and disruptive, and inside a conservation area it can raise extra heritage considerations. With moling we excavate two small pits at either end of the supply run, drive an impact mole through the ground between them, and pull a new MDPE pipe in behind it. The old lead pipe is disconnected at both ends and left buried. The ground between the pits stays undisturbed, which on a period Bromley frontage is exactly what protects the surfaces you’d otherwise have to reinstate.

Bromley’s water is supplied by Thames Water and runs very hard. Thames Water reports an average of around 300 ppm calcium carbonate across its supply area, and independent readings for the BR postcodes sit comfortably in the very hard band. Lead in tap water comes from the old pipe itself, dissolving into water that has been standing in an ageing lead service line overnight. Given how much of Bromley’s housing predates the lead phase-out of the late 1960s, a high number of original lead service lines are still in the ground.
Most Bromley homeowners get in touch after one of these:
Replacing the lead supply with MDPE via moling is the standard fix, and for properties inside Bromley’s conservation areas it is usually the preferred method because it avoids surface disturbance almost entirely. Most jobs are completed in a single day.
