What is Moling?
Trenchless moling is the standard way to replace a buried water supply pipe without digging a trench across your property, and it suits Bracknell’s New Town layout well. Many homes here sit behind drives and small front gardens set out as part of the original planned neighbourhoods, where a traditional dig would mean lifting paving, breaking up tarmac and reinstating everything afterwards. The ground itself helps: much of the town sits on the free-draining Bagshot Formation sands over London Clay, which the mole drives through cleanly between the two access pits. We dig one small pit near the boundary stopcock and one near the property, then drive the mole through the ground between them and pull a new MDPE pipe behind it. The old lead pipe is disconnected at both ends and left in place. The route in between stays exactly as it was, whether that runs under an original corporation-era path or a newer driveway out at Whitegrove.
Why Replace Lead Pipes?
Bracknell sits in a very hard water area, with hardness well above 200 ppm coming through the South East Water network and a regional average of around 290 to 300 ppm. Whatever the hardness, the lead itself comes from the pipe, not the supply: it dissolves into water that has been standing overnight in an ageing lead or lead-jointed line, which is why readings are highest first thing in the morning. With much of Bracknell’s mid-century housing still on its original supply pipes, that is exactly the stock most likely to have one.
