We’re T&L Moling Contractors, WIAPS-registered specialists in trenchless water supply pipe replacement across Basingstoke and the RG21 to RG24 postcodes. Many homes we look at in South Ham, Popley, Winklebury and Oakridge went up during the town’s 1960s and 1970s expansion, and a good number still run on the original metal or lead supply pipes.

Basingstoke is a post-war expansion town. Designated an expanded town in 1961, it grew from around 16,000 people to roughly 47,000 in under a decade as London overspill arrived, and most of the residential stock dates from that wave. Estates such as South Ham, Popley, Winklebury and Oakridge are largely 1960s and 1970s housing, Kempshott was mostly private building of the same era, and Brighton Hill and Chineham filled in through the 1980s and 1990s. The underground services laid alongside all of it are now reaching the same replacement age at roughly the same time, which is the kind of work we are typically called out for.
Whichever estate you are in, the method is the same. We dig two small access pits, one near the boundary stop tap and one near the property, drive an impact mole through the ground between them, and pull a new MDPE supply pipe in behind it. Your driveway, lawn and block paving stay intact, and most residential jobs are finished in a single day.

Paul was great. Fitted me in last minute. Really professional and personable. Very good price and very efficient. All done in 5 hours. Nothing was too much hassle even when I changed my mind for the stop cock location after the pipe was already run. They also ran a temporary connection back to the current mains water location under the stairs as this will be relocated by my plumber at a later date to the new stop cock location. They even left my front garden tidier than when they started :) Would recommend highly. I received my certificate of install the same day and they can connect directly to the water meter as they are WIAPS approved so no need to wait for thames water final connections.+12Posted on Google![]()

We had an external lead water pipe that needed replacing, found this company via Google search and they got back to our web form submission super quickly to agree on a quote and timing. Arrived on time, completed the repairs, put everything back in place (patio tiles etc) meticulously once the works were completed and provided the works certificate promptly. Thanks again to the team at T&L.Posted on Google![]()

In Basingstoke, where so many homes sit behind drives and front gardens laid out as part of the planned post-war estates, trenchless moling is usually the cleaner way to replace a buried supply pipe. The town sits on Cretaceous chalk downland, capped in places with clay-with-flints on the higher ground, and an open trench across that mix means lifting paving, breaking up tarmac and a slow reinstatement afterwards. With moling we excavate two small pits, one near the boundary stop tap and one near where the pipe enters the property, then drive an impact mole through the soil between them and pull a new MDPE pipe along behind it. The old lead pipe is disconnected at both ends and left in the ground. Everything between the two pits stays undisturbed, which on a typical Basingstoke estate property keeps the driveway, front lawn and paths exactly as they were.

Basingstoke sits in a very hard water area, with hardness around 310 ppm coming through the South East Water network from the chalk aquifer beneath the town. That figure is well above the 200 ppm threshold for hard water. The lead in tap water comes from the old pipe itself, dissolving into water that has stood overnight in an ageing lead line, so the town’s 1960s and 1970s housing still on its original supply pipes is exactly where that risk sits.
Most Basingstoke homeowners get in touch after one of these:
